New Walk-in Medical Centres for Derby

Both Derby City Primary Care Trust and Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust have announced new walk-in GP centres for both Derby City and Ilkeston within the next year. These revolutionary new centres will allow patients to see a doctor without having to register or make an appointment, meaning all kinds of medical services can be accessed throughout the day and evening 7 days a week.

These centres will be run by private medical companies, a move that has been criticised by many GPs and patient groups. June Lower, chairwoman of a patients' participation group believes that these walk-in centres are excellent for one-off emergencies but not as a frequent medical service; "it's important that people don't see them as a replacement for their local GP, who will be familiar with their medical history."
