Former Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Marc
Godwin has defected to the Conservatives. He
was welcomed by Shadow Chancellor George Osborne and Andrew Bingham,
High Peak Prospective Conservative Parliamentary Candidate.
Mr Godwin, who fought the High Peak seat in 2005, and polled 10,000 votes, commented "I believe David Cameron and the Conservatives are the only way forward and I am doing my modest little bit to try and get Andrew elected. I
think Gordon Brown is increasingly clueless and looks like he has been
promoted once too often – and I don't think the Liberal Democrats can
carry the fight. Nick Clegg has made no impact and the policies have
made no impact."
Mr Bingham said: "I think it is
telling that someone as committed as Marc has come across to the
Conservatives. I think it shows the message the Conservatives are
putting across and the policies are beginning to resonate to the
general man and lady in the street. I would applaud Marc for
the courage shown at making this step. It is a big step to change
parties but it is typical of what is happening across the country."
Shadow
Chancellor George Osborne said "Locally it is fantastic news to have
Marc supporting Andrew. Nationally Marc is not alone: many many Lib Dem
councillors and rank and file are now supporting David Cameron and the
Conservative Party."
